Lady Godiva
Lady G letting her hair down at Godiva Festival

Lady Godiva rode through the streets of medieval Coventry naked as the day she came into this Earth to protest against the taxes her husband, the Earl of Mercia was imposing on the hard working Coventrian folk.

We like to think that theres something of that original show of spirit, bravery and defiance that Lady G showed all those years ago at Coventrys very own Godiva Festival. Yeh sure we know the beers expensive. The security tight as the Coventry FC board. And lets not talk about the falconry on show every year which never quite hits the highs you remember from your teenage years. But holy shit its like Lady G’s protest has been heard and in return we get a FREE music festival – on our doorstep.

Some of the music isn’t our taste. But then again some of it is. The organisers try and keep everyone pretty sweet. Even your parents who are still clutching on to there 80’s teenage years and absolutely won’t let go especially now they think the youth now enjoy a bit of 80’s wrong. So that’s them sorted Friday night.

Saturday is the day usually that hits the Lady G spot. Fuelled by Spicy Hot Cider and some freshly grown with a bit of Benson the music is looking pretty good. Main Stage highlights for us are Tempting Rosie with a bit of Ska/Dub for an early doors brassy skank – the lineup meanders into decent fillers (full lineup on the site) with perhaps a look in at The Primitives for old times sake and then the man Damon Gough who has been a bit quiet of late but delivers his beautifully crafted music and lyrics (Hour of the Bewilderbeast still a monster record) at 8:00PM.

The Whatever stage kicks off with the brothers Leape selecting and spinning. Expect a mixed bag of Rockabilly to Hip Hop. Soul to Folk. The lineup is pretty solid as we’ve talked about before but you should definitely check (Full Whatever Stage Lineup with times on Site) out Cov Experimental Hip Hop crew 7th Wave take the system over with one of their legendary shows early doors (please get down early to see these peeps) nice chilled summery trip hop sounds from Danny and the crew. Cov band Shackletons with their raspy blend of alt country folk who always put on a belter and notch it up at Godiva. Tin Angel Records signed Black Carrot perform their messy funk tinged jazzy dirt – White Funk and Blackmail have been tracks on regular rotation in the studio here.

Cov breakers and Hip Hop tent / Frontline favourites Kombat Breakers pop in to do their very own spectacular breaking. 3 piece from Manchester Cats in Paris are then followed by Big Beat brummies Bentley Rhythm Ace. Busting a gut. Expect it to get pretty sweaty in the tent. Then Covert favourite Herbaliser are in attendance for some crafted beat business all finished off with a brimful of Asha and Cornershop.

If you still aint done. Theres the obligatory after parties. Getting bigger and better year on year. Belgrade is looking tight as a nuns from 6:00PM till about 01:00AM taking in some truly BIG cov bands with Covert favourites 91db at 00:20am 11:20pm sees punk pop filth The Ripps at 10:20pm comes the ressurection – be warned its Charles Dexter Ward 9:30pm sees Reubens Cane it and at 8:40pm The Bellows play 7:50pm see Wes Finch  & his Dirty Dirty Band) perform all kicking off with Shockparade at 7:00pm and Resurrection Men at 6:10pm.

Did we mention Bentley Rhythm Ace are playing at Inspire after as well? Surely we did.

So there you go. Quick and rough round up – please do visit the Godiva Festival site for full details and please please gather as one Coventry.
